Maybe. But in this industry, scams and unpleasant surprises are all too common. I’ve bought and sold several trucks myself, and I’ve met dozens of aspiring food truckers who went out of business after falling for a vehicle that seemed like a good deal. Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I bought.

Used food trucks: where to start?

The first mistake is to start by looking at the photos. Photos are something you choose. What you can’t choose is how you feel when you stand in front of the service counter.

When you visit a used food truck, always start by checking the exterior and the service window. Stand at the customer-facing window and take a look. Can you work comfortably? Can two people pass each other in the kitchen? Is the height right for you?

If the opening seems too narrow to you, trust your instincts. I learned this the hard way with my first truck: the opening was nice and bright, but too low for me. As a result, my back was killing me after every shift. After six months, I sold the whole thing. If your gut tells you no, listen to it.

What the interior tells you about the seller

Once inside, ask yourself a simple question: is this space suited to your business? A food truck equipped to sell kebabs or burgers is not at all suitable for making crepes or pancakes. Workflows, equipment placement, ventilation—everything changes depending on the business.

Take a look at the condition of the stainless steel surfaces, the fryer gaskets, the food pans, and the hood. A well-maintained interior is a sign that the seller has taken their work seriously. A greasy interior with black seals, rusty screws, and warped shelves indicates a truck that has been mistreated or poorly maintained. It tells you a lot about how the owner ran their business.

And don’t be fooled by a superficial cleaning job. Look behind the appliances, under the countertops, and in the corners. That’s where the truth lies.

One last thing: even if the truck seems perfect for your concept, always set aside a budget for modifications. Even a well-suited truck almost always requires adjustments—repositioning equipment, adding an outlet, replacing a bin, or reinforcing a shelf. Expect to spend at least €2,000 to €5,000 for basic modifications.

The mechanics: the mistake every buyer makes

That’s where most people go wrong. They look at the kitchen, they picture themselves there, they imagine their menu on the sign… and they forget that a food truck is, first and foremost, a heavy vehicle—often an older one—that has driven tens of thousands of miles while constantly overloaded.

Shock absorbers and tires wear out quickly on a food truck. Faster than on a conventional vehicle, because the truck is constantly loaded—with equipment, supplies, gas, and water. A truck that looks to be in good condition may have worn-out shock absorbers, unevenly worn tires, and steering that’s starting to play up.

The golden rule: have the truck inspected by a mechanic before making any purchase. Not just the local mechanic who’ll only take a quick look underneath with a flashlight. A proper technical inspection, a full service, and a diagnosis of the transmission and engine. Expect to pay between €100 and €200 for a thorough inspection. It’s the best investment you’ll make in this process.

Used food trucks for sale: a major red flag

I have a very simple rule when I’m looking for a used food truck: if the seller refuses to let me take the truck to a mechanic, I walk away. Immediately. Without haggling, without trying to understand the reasons, and without letting myself be swayed by a price that seems very attractive.

An honest seller who has taken good care of their truck has no reason to refuse a mechanical inspection. None at all. If they say no, it’s because they’re hiding something. Maybe an engine on its last legs. Maybe a rattling transmission. Maybe an undisclosed accident history. You may never know the exact answer, but that refusal is the answer in itself.

I’ve seen people buy trucks for €15,000 because the price seemed low and the seller had given them verbal assurances. Six months later, they had spent €8,000 on mechanical repairs. The bargain had turned into a money pit. Don’t be one of those people.

Affordable used food trucks: the trailer alternative

If you're on a really tight budget and looking for a cheap used food truck to get started, I want to tell you about an alternative that many people aren't aware of: a converted portable building trailer.

For around €14,000 all-inclusive with basic fittings, you can launch your business with a food truck that spares you all the mechanical hassles of an old truck. No vehicle inspections to worry about, no unexpected repair costs, and enough mobility to reach most locations.

Obviously, this isn’t suitable for every situation. If you’re targeting night markets, festivals, or locations that involve a lot of moving around, a trailer can be limiting. But for testing a concept, evaluating a location, or getting started on a tight budget, it’s a very viable option that I recommend exploring before taking on debt for an old truck that’s going to cost you a fortune.

Conclusion

Buying a used food truck can be an excellent decision. But it can also be the mistake that derails your project before you’ve even served your first meal. The difference often comes down to a few key things: trusting your instincts about when to open for business, inspecting the interior with a professional eye, budgeting for renovations, having the mechanical systems thoroughly inspected—and walking away immediately if the seller refuses to allow this inspection.

I’ve gone into even greater detail about these checks in Chapter 4 of my ebook, including checklists and questions you should always ask the seller.
